Why Rhetoric Class Has Been Beneficial to Me.

To be quite honest with you, I wasn’t looking forward to this class. This was going to be my non-science, blow off class that I had to take in order to graduate. That’s it. But, to my surprise, it turned out to be more than that. It helped that Rachel is really awesome and funny. I felt like I could really relate with her which I think is very important and helped make this class easier and more fun. Plus, she laughed at my lame jokes and my sarcastic remarks, which made me feel awesome. But, it wasn’t just Rachel that made this class better than I thought, I actually learned how to become a better writer, which is weird, because I already thought I was a kick ass writer. As it turns out, I wasn’t really, and Rachel helped me see that through her critical, but extremely helpful comments and tips.

I learned how to think about my audience, which I had never really thought to do before. Before this class, all I would do was write a paper that I thought was awesome and would get me a satisfying grade. I didn’t matter to me who was going to be reading it and I didn’t really care what they thought of it, just as long as I got a good enough grade. This class has made me care about my audience. Writing about stem cells, a subject near and dear to my heart, made me realize that I want everybody to care about stem cells as much as I do. In order for them to make them care, I had to write a carefully planned and strategic paper that would make them relate to me and see my side of the argument. It helped to read papers that were against stem cell research because, even though I thought that the articles were stupid because they weren’t in favor of it, they did make good points that would help their specific audiences understand their arguments. It also helped to give a stem cell presentation for my peers, because I will be giving presentations like that (except longer) for my actual job. This was very beneficial because it helped me see what I needed to work on before I gave a presentation to future clients.

Because of this class, whenever I write another paper, be it for class or for my company, I will always set appropriate time aside to do thorough research and will study my audience so that I can properly catch their attentions.

Paper 3 controversy details

For paper 3, I will be speaking as a representative of my company, Celltex Therapeutics Corporation, in an attempt to persuade a potential patient that they should receive stem cell treatment through our company. I will argue that getting stem cell therapy through Celltex is worthwhile and beneficial, despite some unfavorable claims by the FDA and others that have come up in the past few months. The audience I will be addressing are people who are thinking about getting stem cell treatment but are unaware and uniformed about the process. Here is kind of a brief outline:

Embryonic stem cells has been an outstanding controversy for many decades due to the fact that embryos are destroyed in order to harvest the stem cells. Many people have tried finding alternatives to embryonic stem cells, including the newest Nobel Prize winner, Dr. Yamanaka. He discovered induced pluripotent stem cells, which are adult cells that have been transformed into embryonic stem cells. However, his work is garnering controversy as well, due to the fact that he reprogrammed the adult cells into stem cells using an HEK-293 cell line. This cell line is cells from a child that was aborted in the 1970s. Although Dr. Yamanaka never killed embryos directly, his work did involve embryonic cells.

Celltex uses a different type of technology that does not involve embryos whatsoever. We specialize in harvesting autologous adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells. Autologous = the stem cells that you receive with your treatment come from your own body. Adipose-derived = the stem cells are harvested from your own fat tissue. Mesenchymal = the stem cells harvested originate from the mesenchyme, which is the base and origin of all cells that become your tissues (including blood). The mesenchyme is where all of your cells are made. To sum up, a client gets a small sample of fat from their abdomen extracted. From this sample of fat, there are ~250,000 mesencymal stem cells. We then clone the stem cells to make about 1 billion stem cells. Whenever the patient needs their stem cells, we inject them back into the patient. Essentially, all we’re doing is growing more of your cells and injecting them back into you which helps your body heal itself.

I will then provide evidence and proof that this type of treatment works by giving examples of real patients that have been treated and their progress. This includes the patient Governor Rick Perry, who has had stem cell treatment for his back. Rick Perry himself has stated that “Americans should not have to go over seas to receive stem cell treatment.”

I will then address the issues that the FDA has with Celltex and refute them. Because Celltex is the only company in the United States with this type of technology, the FDA is monitoring our processes closely and have been giving out red flags. For example, the FDA is claiming that Celltex is making a drug because we clone the stem cells in a special type of serum. However, this serum that we are using has a US patent and is only made up of essential nutrients and other things that are found naturally in the body. We even run tests on the stem cells that are cloned for every client to prove that the cloned cells are exactly the same as the original cells. How can your own cells be considered a drug? I will also address a few other smaller issues as well and refute them in order to convince my reader that the claims made by others are uneducated and not true and that they should receive stem cell treatment with Celltex.

Caroline Adams' blog: A Letter to My Mom

carolineadams30:

Dear Mom,

I know thanksgiving is only 16 days away, but I would like to ask to make a change to the plans. I know thanksgiving is usually spent in Louisiana with Grandma and Grandpa but I would like to remind you that I have missed a holiday before. So because of this I don’t think it would be…

A Letter to My Best Friend

Dear Sarah,

Over Thanksgiving I would like to go to Aspen. I would be going to Aspen with this amazing boy and his family, who I met at the beginning of this semester. I met him when I left my calculus class he stopped me with a sugar packet in his hand and asked me if I dropped my nametag. Sarah, this was just such a cheesy way to try and talk to me that I knew he had a sense of humor. I knew he was worth talking to because of this joke, so I talked to him as I walked back to my dorm. I had this feeling as I walked to my dorm that he was the one. I know this is such a cliché thing to say but I mean they say, “love at first sight” and don’t we all believe it. I just felt this feeling and then when we got back to my dorm he asked me on a date to get fro-yo. Fro-yo Sarah, it’s the way to my heart I couldn’t say no to the second date he asked me on. The second date was a hit just like the first one and we have been dating ever sense. I know you’ve always wanted me to find a nice guy, and this is the one.

There is only one problem…I need the money to get to Aspen, mainly the money to buy the plane ticket. Would you be willing to pay for my trip so that I can meet his family? I know that you’ve been to Africa before and so that you know how awesome traveling is. I’ve always wanted to go skiing in Colorado and this would be so much fun and a great opportunity for me.  If you do this for me, I will repay the favor as I always have.

This trip is an opportunity for me to meet his family and to show them what a wonderful friend and person I am. It will be a great environment to get to know his family as well as relax before the last wave of test starts. Sarah I know this is really late notice but I think it would be a great experience and a fun vacation nearing the end of the semester. I know you value time spent with the people you love and this is just what I need before the semester is over. If you do this for me, I’ll be forever grateful. You are the best friend a girl could ever ask for. Even if you say no, I will always love you. You’re going to love him, I just know it. He treats me the way I deserve to be treated and I know that you’ve always wanted me to find a good boy to take home to the parents. This boy is definitely a keeper.

Hugs and Kisses,

Caroline Adams

Letter to my parents

Dear Mommy,

I am writing this letter in regards to Thanksgiving break which is in 2 weeks. As you are well aware, Daniel and I have been dating for 3 months now. You’ve probably figured out by now due to the fact that I can’t stop talking about him, that I love him very much. Mom, you even told me the last time that I came home that I seemed considerably happier. It’s because of him. And, when y’all met him a few weeks ago, Dad even said that he had no complaints about Dan.

What I’m trying to lead up to here is that Dan’s parents invited me to tag along with them on their family vacation to Aspen, Colorado. This trip is happening over Thanksgiving break. I know that I said that I would come home for Thanksgiving, but this just came up a few days ago and you’ve always told me that nothing ever bad comes from asking. So, I am asking you if it’d be okay with you and Daddy to let me go with them. I know that I haven’t met his family yet, with the exception of his mother (it was her idea to invite me), but this would give me a great opportunity to get to know them.

You may be thinking, “they’ve only been dating for three months and she already wants to go to Colorado with him.” But mom, think about when you met Dad. You met him in February when you were only 19 years old and 9 months later in November you married him. Doesn’t that sound a little fast too? My point is that you love to tell me that when you met Dad, you felt like you had known him your whole life and it was like talking to your best friend. You knew right then and there that you were going to marry him. I know that because I’m your baby girl that you may not like to hear this or believe this, but I felt the same way when I met Daniel. It truly was love at first site and I know that I’ll be with him forever. No, I’m not going to marry him in 9 months. Stuff like that will wait until after school. I’m not stupid.

I also understand that Thanksgiving is a family thing. But this is only one Thanksgiving out of many many many more to come. Last year, you let Hannah leave to go to Louisiana to spend Thanksgiving with Kevin and his family. If you can let my older sister spend Thanksgiving with her boyfriend’s family, can you let me do the same thing?

Also, because of the short notice, if you let me go to Colorado, I need to buy a plane ticket. Dan’s parents said that they would pay for everything else (food, hotel, skiing rentals etc.) but that they just couldn’t stretch another plane ticket since they’re already buying plane tickets for 6. The thing is, I can’t afford a plane ticket right now, so I’d need a little help from you and daddy. You know that I absolutely hate asking for money, but you always told me to never hesitate to ask if I needed help. As you know, I am starting a job with UT RecSports in January, so I will pay you back. Or, if you’d like, you could consider this plane ticket to be my Christmas present this year. I don’t need anything for Christmas so you could consider this to be my present and nothing else.

Please find it in your heart to let me go to Colorado with Dan and his family. You know that I appreciate everything that you and daddy do for me. I can never tell you thank you enough. You and daddy mean the world to me and I love you with all my heart. I only wish that one day I’ll be as good a mom as you were to me. Let me know if you have any questions about this trip. Dan’s mom said she would be more than willing to talk with you or meet with you if you had any concerns.

Thank you so much for everything you do for me. I love you so much.

Love,

Shelby

Coincidence?

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/vikings-punter-chris-kluwe-poses-gay-magazine-promote-144612785—nfl.html

I just saw this article on Yahoo! about Chris Kluwe and how he posed for a gay magazine to show his support for the gay community. I find this pretty interesting since we read his letter in class yesterday. Way to go, Chris!

I love this picture. This is a picture of Ryan Gosling looking snazzy as usually and the caption says:

More girls need to be infatuated by a man with an education, ambition, faith and goals rather than a dude with “swag”. Swag doesn’t pay your bills.

This picture is targeting an audience of the younger generation of girls. It seems like these days young girls are losing sight of their futures. They are obsessed with living their lives to the fullest (hence the worst acronym ever created: YOLO) and they seem to not care about what is right ahead of them. I grew up in a high school that had the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the state of Texas. It seemed like girls couldn’t wait to find a ‘cool guy’ that would get them pregnant. That’s just sad.
The speaker behind the photo is probably a person like me who is an extreme believer in the need to educate our young girls. Girls these days need to realize that boys with ‘swag’ aren’t the ones that stick around. Its the boys who are smart and sincere and kind that are going to stay by your side. Unfortunately, it seems like girls today don’t even realize that the good boys are out there because they seem so intent on getting a guy with swag. The speaker wants the audience to know that there are bigger and better things out there rather than just some dude who isn’t going treat you properly. This photo used pathos to elicit emotion in me because I dealt with a similar and extreme situation with a bad guy when I was in high school. It is because of this that I want all girls to have good role models and to know that some boys just aren’t worth it. The photo also shows Ryan Gosling looking spiffy and handsome as can be. This was used in order to show girls what a real man should look like. Not a boy whose pants are beneath their butts and is blinged out. A REAL MAN. A real man is going to support you, not a low-life dude with so-called swag.

Blog post #3 - Paper writing conundrums

There are a few things concerning my ability to write a good paper. The first and major one being time management. As a senior studying genetics and biotechnology, this class is the only class that isn’t science related. Because of this, this paper is at the bottom of my to-do list.

Take yesterday, for example. Yesterday I spent 8 hours drawing diagrams of hearts and muscles and skin and tissue all whilst eating dinosaur chicken nuggets. I know, I am extremely awesome. The reason I studied for my entire Saturday was because I have a human anatomy test on Monday. I didn’t even think about a paper that needs to be written by Wednesday. In fact, I won’t be able to even start writing the paper until Monday during class.

The second issue I am having is getting out of my writing habit of writing really long and descriptive sentences. I do this as a result of my years and years of reading and writing scientific articles. The thing is, researchers and scientists are being paid to make glorious studies, not to write papers that people can easily follow. They also have a tendency to use bad grammar. I once read a paper that spelled cells Celllss. Not kidding. Although I will use proper grammar, its going to be hard for me to stop, slow down, and use shorter, less repetitive sentences.

My last problem will probably be the fact that I don’t usually proof read my papers. I’ll sit down, write the entire paper in an hour or two, and think “wow, I wrote an amazing paper. I totally don’t need to/have time to re-read it.” I promise, however, I will take my time and double check everything before I turn this paper in.

This makes me so incredibly happy. This is literally the best thing I’ve seen in a while. Ben Folds Five + Fraggle Rock = Amazing and one happy girl. Nothing can be better than my favorite band and my favorite fraggles together. I cannot wait to see Ben Folds Five next Monday :)
