To be quite honest with you, I wasn’t looking forward to this class. This was going to be my non-science, blow off class that I had to take in order to graduate. That’s it. But, to my surprise, it turned out to be more than that. It helped that Rachel is really awesome and funny. I felt like I could really relate with her which I think is very important and helped make this class easier and more fun. Plus, she laughed at my lame jokes and my sarcastic remarks, which made me feel awesome. But, it wasn’t just Rachel that made this class better than I thought, I actually learned how to become a better writer, which is weird, because I already thought I was a kick ass writer. As it turns out, I wasn’t really, and Rachel helped me see that through her critical, but extremely helpful comments and tips.
I learned how to think about my audience, which I had never really thought to do before. Before this class, all I would do was write a paper that I thought was awesome and would get me a satisfying grade. I didn’t matter to me who was going to be reading it and I didn’t really care what they thought of it, just as long as I got a good enough grade. This class has made me care about my audience. Writing about stem cells, a subject near and dear to my heart, made me realize that I want everybody to care about stem cells as much as I do. In order for them to make them care, I had to write a carefully planned and strategic paper that would make them relate to me and see my side of the argument. It helped to read papers that were against stem cell research because, even though I thought that the articles were stupid because they weren’t in favor of it, they did make good points that would help their specific audiences understand their arguments. It also helped to give a stem cell presentation for my peers, because I will be giving presentations like that (except longer) for my actual job. This was very beneficial because it helped me see what I needed to work on before I gave a presentation to future clients.
Because of this class, whenever I write another paper, be it for class or for my company, I will always set appropriate time aside to do thorough research and will study my audience so that I can properly catch their attentions.
